MINUTES: Globalization Study Group
Meeting of November 15, 2005

Present: BD, GD, AY

With only three of the regular members present we decided to discuss where we have been, the progress we may or may not have made and we took a glance ahead.  To summarize our very informal, wide-ranging discussion I note that we came to a few tentative decisions which  we hope will improve communications, advertise our work more broadly, and attract new participants in the coming year.  We immediately decided to present our  ideas to all of our regular participants for their comments.  If the regular participants do not disagree, we will implement the following proposals :

  • All participants are invited to suggest books or major Articles on Globalization for our next meeting. Please forward your suggestions to BD,GD, and AY who will discuss and present the top five choices to the group via an e-mail.
  • We discussed using our web site more effectively as both an archival reference to our work  and medium for improving our communication. We thought that we should store at least four months of our meeting summaries on the Global Justice web site and use the same section to announce our future meetings.  PH and AY will continue to prepare and distribute the meeting summaries directly to the active members.
  • We agreed that AY is responsible for communicating our  request to post our meeting summaries at the CGJ website with Holly and Gregory has agreed to discuss with related work issues with her.
  • Prior to the first session of  2006, we will plan a welcoming meeting for the new participants. The General format of the first meeting in 2006 may be structured a bit more formally. Assuming we will attract a large group, GD agreed to make a welcoming statement including a summary of our work and a reference to the CGJ website with instructions to help newcomers access our meeting summaries, a brief review of work during 2005 followed by a general presentation of the neoliberal globalization and then introduce our work plan for 2006.
  • We will prepare an  Article for the Atención  summarizing our work prior to our first meeting in 2006.
  • We will continue with our plan to make a presentation at the Winter "Snowbird" Symposium.
  • We will publicize the Global Studies Group at the Symposium.
  • BD and GD mentioned a number of recent books, paper form and on-line publications that we may consider to place on the list of the top five recommended readings for the year.

Will each of you present your suggestions in complete bibliographic form?  If you know that the paper form books are available in SMA, please let us know where they may be found or how we can make them available to participants.

QUESTION: Should we include the top three books as suggested readings in our Attention Article?

We also discussed, very informally, fundraising ideas.  In order not to lose one of  rich, spontaneously expressed ideas, I  note briefly that GD proposed exploring the possibility of creating a noted, quest speaker list and attempt to have one or two major speakers come to SMA.

Next meeting: 10 Jan '06  Place and time to be announced.

Respectfully submitted by Arturo Yarish and Pat Huntington
